Eldridge campaign spokeman on Meehan endorsement of Tsongas:
A spokesman for state Representative James Eldridge of Acton congratulated Tsongas on a “good endorsement.”
But “we’re happy to put our list of grass-roots Democratic activist supporters up against hers any day,” said Michael Moschella. “We have the kind of support that is needed to run a truly grass-roots campaign, which is how you win congressional races in Massachusetts.”
It is SO on.

Snap! indeed. Maybe Moschella could have used the word “grass-roots” a couple more times… I think it is interesting how Eldridge is trying to “co-opt” the Patrick momentum with progress, grass-roots, net-roots activism, but his campaign manager was Gabrieli’s field director. I didn’t even know Gabrieli had a field operation. Must’ve missed it somehow.

I don’t think Jamie is trying to “co-opt” the grassroots momentum that brought Governor Patrick to office. First off, the grassroots are independent of any candidate IMHO. Candidates who are interested in winning are wise to curry the favor and support of the grassroots b/c it is our people powered muscle that kicks tushy! Second, I think Jamie is legit and realizes the power of getting people to reconnect, just as Deval did; he isn’t doing it for convenience sake. And I am pretty sure that Jamie was one of the earliest legislative supporters of Patrick which to me indicates that Jamie was for the grassroots before being for the grassroots was cool here in MA.
As for Gabby’s field op, yes, that does seem like a bit of an oxymoron doesn’t it?

turch - welcome to Beyond 495. Yeah, Moschella did work for Gabrieli. He also worked for Rachel Kaprielian, and for Congressman Tim Mahoney in Florida, who beat that knucklehead Mark Foley. So what? Each politician has a different strategy. There are quite a few Deval Patrick campaign workers working for Niki Tsongas, does that make her the grassroots candidate?
As Andy points out, you can’t co-opt the grassroots. Because there is no monolithic “grassroots” to co-opt. You either inspire people to work for you, or you don’t.
Did I just agree with Andy?! Congratulations universe, you win.

Maybe “co-opt” was a bad word to use… How about “trying to be the netroots candidates.” My dig at Gabrieli was more intended as a dig at Gabrieli (who I did not vote for, by the way, and never would) and not at Moschella or Eldridge. So….deep breath everyone. Cripes.
